Insects constitute over 70% of all known animal species in Germany, making them a central component of terrestrial ecosystems and performing essential functions such as pollination, decomposition of organic matter, and pest regulation.
Starting with a historical analysis of the concept of animal welfare, the thesis explores the legal classification of insects as well as their representation within the animal welfare discourse and in public perception. It takes into account scientific findings on sentience, cognitive abilities, and the living conditions of insects.
Another focus lies on the increasing use of insects in food and feed production. In addition, the thesis analyzes existing campaigns and initiatives aimed at raising awareness about insects and their protection.
